Setting Foundation for Clyde Grammar

How Pile Vic Delivered a Non-Invasive Foundation Solution in 7 Days

In February 2025, Pile Vic was engaged by AMS Constructions to provide foundational support for Clyde Grammar’s new Collaborate Learning Centre in Clyde North.

This was a significant project that included a full-sized basketball court, retractable grandstand, change rooms with toilets and showers, a canteen, an office and multiple additional rooms.

The site itself posed a few interesting challenges: Firm soil conditions, tightly staged construction schedules and a pile count exceeding 600. While some phases were more labour-intensive than usual, our team’s preparation and adaptability ensured a smooth, successful outcome.

Everything went to plan, and we were proud to contribute to such a vital community development.

Soil Conditions Matter

Before any pile installation, a detailed soil report is essential.

These reports provide insights into subsurface conditions such as soil type, density, and moisture—factors that influence pile size and required torque. For this project, the report revealed particularly firm soil, which necessitated a pre-drilling approach to ensure smooth and precise installations.

Given these conditions, most of the piles required pre-drilling—a step that naturally extended the timeline compared to projects in softer soils. Pre-drilling creates a pilot hole that reduces soil resistance, minimizes torque stress on machinery, and helps maintain vertical alignment. It also protects both the piles and surrounding structures, promoting a safer, more controlled installation process.

Despite the added complexity, our install crew quickly established a steady workflow. Their work became rhythmic and efficient—almost meditative. That kind of focus and precision is exactly what’s needed when you’re installing hundreds of piles.

Our Surveyor of Choice

Thomas, our surveyor, played a pivotal role in the success of this project.

He was responsible for mapping out the exact pile locations and guiding the installation team. Gone are the days of string lines and wooden pegs—today’s surveys rely on cutting-edge tools.

Thomas used the Total Station LEICA Icon iCR70, which allowed for rapid, pinpoint-accurate layout. Here’s how it works:

  1. The design layout is uploaded digitally.
  1. The total station projects and locks onto specific target points.
  1. It guides the precise placement of each pile using real-time spatial feedback.

With over six hundred piles to install, this level of precision wasn’t just helpful—it was absolutely essential for maintaining speed, safety, and structural integrity.

Installation in Action

Jules and Steve, our installers, worked with 76mm x 4mm x 2m piles. Most were predrilled using a 230mm auger attached to our Hitachi ZX65USB excavator. Six of the piles were upsized to 114mm to meet structural needs.

They operated with rhythm and consistency, collaborating closely with the site engineer to ensure every pile met exact depth and alignment specifications. Access restrictions meant that equipment placement required careful planning, but the team adapted quickly.

To document the process, we brought in Dan from Mango Media. He captured the team in action with a drone for aerial views and a motorized gimbal tripod for steady ground-level shots. Dan’s footage showcased all aspects of the work—from Jules and Steve at the controls to Thomas surveying with the total station. It perfectly highlighted the professionalism and teamwork that defined this job.

Final Thoughts

In total, we were on-site for 15 days, and we’re incredibly proud of the result. Helping bring Clyde Grammar’s indoor stadium to life was more than just another job—it was an opportunity to support a space where future generations will learn, compete, and grow.

We’re honoured to have laid the foundation—literally and figuratively—for such a meaningful and enduring facility. We look forward to seeing the completed stadium, knowing that Pile Vic’s work lies solidly at its heart.
